AI broke recruiting.

AI made applying to jobs free. A candidate can now send five hundred applications in an afternoon, each with a tailored cover letter, without reading a single posting. So every posting drowns: hundreds of AI-written applications, a handful worth reading, and no way to tell them apart at a glance. That is what broke recruiting. Not lazy candidates, not careless recruiters. The cost of applying went to zero, and volume did what volume always does to signal.
The numbers are public. LinkedIn reported handling on the order of eleven thousand job applications a minute in 2025, with application volume up nearly half in a single year. Gartner projects that by 2028 as many as one in four candidate profiles worldwide could be fake. Recruiters describe postings that collect four hundred applications in days. Candidates describe sending hundreds of applications and hearing nothing at all. Both are telling the truth, and each side's rational response makes the other side's problem worse.
The race nobody wins
The reflex answer is more AI: filters that score the pile, rankers that shortlist it. But AI filters reading AI applications is an arms race with no finish line. The same models write the applications and grade them, so the text converges on whatever the filter rewards. The filter stops measuring the candidate and starts measuring the candidate's tooling. Real people get buried for pattern-matching reasons nobody audits, and when something goes wrong there is no name on the decision. Nobody chose. It just happened.
Candidates feel this as the black hole. Postings get hundreds of applications, recruiters cannot read them all, and silence became the default answer. Nobody decided to ghost anyone. The volume decided.
So we removed the one-click.
What actually fixes it
Spam is a cost problem. One-click applying pushed the cost of an application to zero, and everything downstream follows from that. The fix is to restore the cost without restoring the busywork.
On playboox there is no application form and no one-click apply. A candidate applies from their AI assistant, Claude or ChatGPT, by answering the employer's actual questions in their own words. The assistant handles the logistics: finding the role, scheduling, keeping track. The candidate supplies the substance, one real conversation per application. Applying takes effort again, so mass-applying stops being possible, and the flood never starts.
What arrives on the other side is different in kind, not just in count. Every application is complete: every question answered, before a human ever looks. Every application is screened by construction. And because volume is capped by effort, answering everyone becomes feasible. On playboox every application gets a decision made by a named person with a recorded reason, and every candidate hears back. The black hole is not patched. It is structurally gone.
The economics enforce the honesty. Employers pay per complete application, nineteen dollars, only when one arrives worth reading. A tool paid per application has no incentive to let spam through: spam would be charging customers for garbage. Volume is the enemy of the business model, which is exactly how it should be.
The bet
Every previous fix tried to process the flood faster. Better parsers, better filters, better rankings. Processing the flood concedes the flood. The bet here is different: make the application itself carry proof of effort, and the flood never forms. Candidates who care spend twenty minutes and get read and answered. Candidates who are carpet-bombing move on to easier targets. Recruiters read everything that arrives, because everything that arrives is worth reading.
